yet, so the only thing that makes him hesitate is the temptation of putting that trip off for a day or two -- or more -- to see if his leg feels any better, but... then again, it's probably best to just get it out of the way, huh? Just to be safe.So Ven finally gives her another smile.]
Why not? I think I've rested enough. [Since he doesn't have to hide it now, he moves to stand with obvious care, using the tree behind him for support. Still, he can't help wincing as he does.] We should find it pretty fast if we just ask around.
Church
she'll deal with it when they get there.]
I'd think so, yes! And then we can have a look around the festival.
Church
...Wait that's not much better.
Eh, they'll cross that bridge when they come to it. He does grin at the mention of the festival, though.]
Oh, yeah! I saw a little bit of it when Yuna helped me to town -- but we didn't go too far. [They didn't want to push his luck, after all.
He pauses just long enough to test his weight, trying to find the best way of moving at the moment to minimize discomfort. It seems to change from day to day. When he finds it, he starts at an easy pace in the direction of the city. K'pandolu will have zero trouble keeping up, for sure.] There's a lot to see, though! A lot like the city was during the Blitzball tournament, just with more games and things.
Re: Church
Yuna did? That's good. What did you see, then?
[it certainly makes it easy enough to keep an eye on him as they go, too. She chuckles lightly.] It is! Did you see much of that?
Church
[Not just participating, but observing, as well. It was a nice break from the silence of the woods out here, too.]
You mean the Blitzball tournament? Yeah, I went to all of Yuna's games -- tried a lot of new foods, too! [That was pretty great, no lie.] I'd only been to one festival before that one. They were pretty different, actually.
Church
Oh? Excellent! It's good to hear she had supporters there. [she tilts her head.] What was that festival like, then?
Church
[Even at his speed, they make good time on their way to the city, and it's not long before the festival crowd can be heard. Ven shoots her a grin as they near the entrance.]
Don't mind crowds, do you?
Church
[she shakes her head, with a soft laugh.]
I doubt I'd have made it in Ul'dah if I did.
Church
He stops at the head of the street, looking around thoughtfully.]
So... if it's anything like Aqures Ixen, the hospital would be deeper in, right?
[He's unfamiliar with general city layouts, okay. He was sheltered.]
Church
[she peers around, too, head tilted slightly.]
I think so. Let's have a look.
[if it doesn't look like they're getting closer in a little while, though, she'll snag someone to ask directions from. It won't do much good if he walks longer than he has to.]
Church
I, um... I didn't travel a lot in the past, but -- I guess you could say I started before I ended up here. [He doesn't give a time frame, though. "Recent" is relative in his case.] But I saw a lot of new places when I did! I'd like to keep seeing them, too, one day. [After everything's set right again -- here, and back home. What's left of it.
But it's too bright and nice out for that way of thinking!! And they're headed for the hospital! Which would not be anywhere near his list of good things to look forward to if he knew just what that meant! But he doesn't, so, after they get pointed in the right direction soon after that, he's still chatting away, even if he's slowed his pace a bit.]
So what about you? You've been to big cities before?
Church
[she nods.] I have! Ul'dah seems the grandest- most like due to the many merchants who live within her boundaries- but I must confess to a certain fondness for Limsa Lominsa.
Church
[Spoken like someone who knows castles. Neither does he point out that he saw and even visited some other castles, too, because in his mind they're not outside his concept of the normal and everyday.
He laughs a bit.]
You've... got a lot of long names where you come from, huh?
Church
[she snorts] It's not that long. You ought to hear some Roegadyn names.
Church
[He's both amused and a little intimidated, to be honest, by the idea of names longer than that -- but oh, hey, here's the hospital. It looks a lot like the one in Aqures Ixen, if a little more tidy, somehow. Not at all intimidating or anything silly like that...]
So, uh -- I've never actually -- been to a hospital before. I mean, I've visited some friends in crystal stasis, but...
[help, K'pandolu, how do.]
Church
[she looks around, taking in as much as she can. The tidiness gives her some confidence, at least- Twelve know Severain of the Alchemists' Guild is brilliant, but his work area…
She looks at Ven and gives him a smile, brushing against him with her elbow briefly.]
You'll be fine. I'm sure the physicians here know what they're about. We'll just need to ask who's available.
Church
The advice is reassuring, so Ven nods with a return smile, and from there it's a matter of talking to the lady at the counter. Ven's limp is painfully (literally) obvious by this point despite the happy face he's keeping on, but it works in his favor, since the receptionist figures he's a more urgent case than the only other person in the waiting room at present, a guy with a cold. When she asks why he's here, he hesitates.]
Well... [He. Kind of literally can't lie, so.] Um -- there was this--
[But as his luck would have it, one of the nurses comes out right then for the next patient -- and Crystallis is apparently good about patients being more important than paperwork, because he's ushered along, and K'pandolu is invited to come as well, likely since Ven's underaged.
He shoots her a look because yes, please come, he's not sure how to explain this help]
Church
[well- strictly, she is an adult. Whether she's any good at it- well. They'll see.
She gives him a nod- she'd have come along for support either way!
The doctor seems pleasant enough, offering Ven and K'pandolu a seat before taking their own, taking out a notebook.]
Now. I believe I can already see what's wrong- so can you tell me what happened, young man?
We had- something of a training accident, unfortunately. [K'pandolu's sitting up straight as she speaks, trying for as much smoothness as she can manage.]
[the doctor nods, eyes on Ven.] Perhaps you'd like to show me.
Church
Oh -- um. Sure... [HERE WE GO...
He rolls his pant leg up to above his knee, exposing the gauze that's already visibly stained with a light shade of red, plus some dirt besides. At that point the doctor takes over, expertly stripping off the medical tape and
yeah that's a face you never want your doctor to make.
The level of incredulity is about what Ven expected, at least. He just didn't predict that the doctor's expression would turn so rigidly serious. After ordering the nurse to retrieve something, he shoots both Ven and K'pandolu a scrutinizing stare.]
That's some training accident. When did this happen?
Uh... a few days ago. Three, I think?
You "think?" [It's clear that truth's hard to swallow, but action first and questions later.] You didn't use healing spells on it?
[As he and Ven go back and forth, the nurse returns shortly with a couple small bags. By then the doctor's learned firsthand that Cure has no effect on the injury, which is baffling him even more than the fact that the wound hasn't a) killed this kid or b) developed advanced signs of infection. Stepping back, he lets the nurse take over in carefully cleaning up the edges of the injury.]
Well, if spells really aren't working on it, then stitches are a must while we monitor it for the time being.
Stitches?
He must've lost a lot of blood, but he seems stable. Surprisingly so. [He's addressing K'pandolu now, ignoring Ven's puzzled looks.] Still, we'll run some tests while he's here. Better safe than sorry, if that's all right by you. We'll also need to go in and clean it, so what exactly caused that puncture in the first place?
Church
She stays straight while the doctor and Ven talk, turned to keep them both in her sights. The doctor's scrutiny is a little awkward, but- they've done the best they can, given the situation. She's pretty sure. And they're here now.
She shifts again when the doctor mentions stitches, shoulders dropping- that'll be inconvenient, but better than leaving it alone.]
He's very resilient. [she nods, and looks to Ven.] Ven, are you all right if he does that? -What kind of tests are we talking about? […ah. And the difficult part, now. Now that she thinks about it, he'd said someone had got the bullet out- perhaps they could have used that.
Oh, well. She takes a deep breath, and looks to the doctor again.]
One of my blades. [which… she hadn't thought to bring with her. Maybe that's a good thing?]
Church
Uh... I guess? If it helps. ["Stitches," though?? Is that a term for something less literal than what he's picturing?]
Just some routine check-ups -- blood tests, just to make sure we won't be sealing up anything nasty in there.
["Sealing" what
what]
But a blade, huh. Not as bad as it could be, then, but we'll check for debris, just to be safe. But don't worry, son, we'll give you a quick shot so you won't feel a thing.
Shot?
[And that's when the nurse steps forward with what has to be the biGGEST AND MOST THREATENING NEEDLE VENTUS HAS EVER SEEN IN HIS LIFE WHAT IS THAT WHAT ARE THEY PLANNING TO DO WHAT ARE THEY GIVING HIM NEEDLES ARE NOT FOR PEOPLE THEY'RE FOR SEWING
wait
stitches
NO
WHAT
WAIT]
Shot? What's a shot?
[SOMEONE PLS TO BE TELLING HIM BEFORE HE FALLS OFF THIS EXAMINATION TABLE
K'PANDOLU WHAT TREACHERY HAS HE BEEN SUBJECTED TO]
Church
But it hasn't so far. So that must be a good sign. And there's no point in double-guessing herself now.
Ven's actions put that out of mind, anyhow, and she grabs for his shoulder.]
Ven- Ven! Stay still. [she grabs his shoulder, trying to make sure he does that, and glances up at the doctor.]
Talk us through this. [she still has faith this is going to help, but she doesn't know much more about shots.
Which the doctor has evidently picked up on, with a strange glance between the two of them.]
It's a simple injection to administer an anaesthetic, which'll numb any pain there might have been while we clean this out.
[and without further ado, he moves to make the injection.]
Church
DO PEOPLE REALLY RESORT TO SUCH SAVAGE MEANS IN THE ABSENCE OF MAGIC WHAT IS THIS EVEN
still, doctors must know what they're talking about and K'pandolu is telling him it's fine so he can trust in them both, surely...!
But trust has nothing to do with pain, unfortunately. Ven doesn't object any further, unless the uncertain grimace on his face counts -- but apparently that needle has to go in deep, and fast, because it feels less like the doctor "injects" it and more like he punches it into Ven's skin, and--
well. Let's just say the receptionist up front probably heard his startled yell just now.
Ten minutes later, thankfully, the doctor's made quick work of cleaning and bandaging the wound more properly and announces that he's done. He adds in some tips about taking care of it, and while Ven is making a note of all that's said, it probably doesn't look like it with the way he's still lying back with an arm over his face.
Just.
Needles.
Who came up with this??]
Church
Understood. That you very much, ser.
Ven, do you think you can manage standing now?
Church
Yeah, think so. [Trauma or not, manners are still in effect as well, so he also thanks the doctor before slipping off the table and carefully onto his feet. He'll still have a limp going, but he can't deny that the aftereffects of the shot are definitely appreciated.
It doesn't take much to have him bounce back, so Ven offers a brighter smile at K'pandolu.]
Yep! I'm ready to go!
[There's also some insistence from the doctor to check back every few days, the mention that they'll have the results of his tests back soon, but... well. That ultimately won't matter.
After some paperwork via the receptionist a few minutes later, it's back into the reassuring light of day.]
Well, that wasn't... [...yeah no he's not going to say "so bad" because now he has a new phobia but he won't mention that.] ...Thanks for coming with me! I'm glad I had someone there.
