Cloud came to a stop, looking at Aya and measuring her tone. He could feel the weight hanging over her. It was hanging over him as well. They weren't bad people, but they had resolved to do bad things for their own reasons.

"We're going to war. It's normal to feel that way. Back home I was lucky to avoid deployment in Wutai as that war was ending. But when the war was finally over I still felt relived. I thought I could finally focus on what was ahead."

He looked around the city. It felt so much darker than it used to when everyone was still here. "I don't know if what we're doing will save this world. But maybe we can give it a chance for next time."
chondriosome: but it's also hysterical. (that's such a sad story.)

Aya's own pace grounded to a halt, as she brought her gaze to Cloud's.

"That's all I want, I guess. Is to give this and the next world a chance. I just wish that the others saw things that way, but..."

But it's to be expected. It's the natural order for opinions to clash and reaction to beget action. Honestly, what were they anticipating when they realized just how thin their options were? That everyone would band together and just agree?

Life is never that easy.

Cloud just responded with a nod before he continued his slow walk. It really wasn't a subject he wanted to press. While she'd witnessed the Heroes breaking over the matter, to Cloud it was much more personal. It was a factioning that cut right through the group of Heroes from Gaia, sending them all their separate ways. From what he knew of each one, and what little he knew about his own future it felt to him like that was the impossible moment.

And he'd hoped that they could all live here happy and together...to avoid the conflicts that they would face in Gaia's timeline.

After a few blocks he finally spoke up again, "So are you going with the deployment to Mysidia?"
chondriosome: no one can stop their love. (carrie/aya is the one true romance of PE)

Aya knew better than to expect everyone to have drawn to one conclusion on these matters. She knew this, and yet it didn't help to make things any easier. Her legs feel strained as she walked, keeping up alongside Cloud.

Her arms folded over her chest at his question, tightening in knots.

"Yeah. I've been put in charge of the soldiers."

Once again, people were depending on her with their lives. Except that this time, it felt much different.

It didn't feel right.

There was something familiar about this. There was a war on and others were going off to fight the big battles while Cloud was remaining behind to aid in security. It wasn't entirely the same, but one of those weird moments of internal vertigo that can strike without warning when history and destiny collide.

Back then, he was with the ShinRa military because it was a job and hopefully it would get him where he wanted to be. Here he was more aware of what was at stake, but he wasn't sure what to make of it anymore.

"Right...be safe out there. We've lost enough friends." Maybe they weren't the best of friends, but he still thought well of her.
