Cloud wasn't completely blind to how Terra felt. He knew what memories the sword carried, they held the same significance for him as well. However while it may have been a symbol of pain and loss to her, it was a symbol of a promise to him. It was his duty to the fallen to carry on for him. Besides, it wasn't like there was anyone he could use it on to get revenge and put the blood debt to rest.

He looked out a nearby window, out to the entrance of the Lunar Gate. Nobody had arrived yet but they'd be there soon. Everything would be put into motion and there wouldn't be any stopping it before it was done. And then it would be a matter of who was left standing when the smoke cleared.

"I told you. I'll make sure that the Calamity doesn't take you as well. Or the others." He never believed that the other Heroes would ever hunt her down for any sins real or imagined. But now they were putting themselves in a position where the choices available were limited.

"If it comes to it, I want you to leave me behind and run. Go to the moon base. You should be safe there."

Terra felt uncertainty grip her heart but she kept up her calm mask. Should she tell him Robin’s plan? Would he leave her side to stop it? It was certainly one way to stop the calamity but it meant the death of others. No matter what they did others would die.

Terra pushed away the thought, her eyes coming to rest on Cloud. “It isn’t the Calamity that I’m worried about Cloud.” The antagonists and the protagonist; Terra didn’t trust any of them. She didn’t know what their goals were and she couldn’t completely understand their moments.

She walked passed Cloud and stopped at the window, she couldn’t look at him or that sword anymore. “I know that you will protect me. You always have but… I know there are people you don’t want to fight.” She turned to look at him. “Will you be prepared if we had to face them?” Terra had Albel, he was the one person she wouldn’t fight and she was sure that Cloud had those people in his life too.

Cloud's eyebrow went up at her comment. It was difficult for someone to NOT be worried about the Calamity considering its slow and sure progression. It had become an inescapable fact of life, not to mention impending death. It was on the minds of everyone in the world, even with the conflict between the Heroes.

Her question pulled things into focus and he mulled over his own memory to think of who she might be worried about. There had been...something that happened before she closed herself off from everyone else. But he'd never heard any talk of trying to hold her responsible for it. Was there something she was hiding from him?

"I...I think so..." He didn't want to face his old friends from home. Given the sheer number of Heroes the odds were actually on his side. Even if it did come down to a faceoff there was a good chance he would simply face others from Gaia.

But there was one he was terrified of facing. One voice he had missed that could probably find a chink of doubt in his resolve. But she'd been avoiding him for about two years now. If she showed up now then it would just prove how cruel fate could be. "I'll do what I have to do in order to keep you safe."

Terra looked back at him, her glimmering blue eyes piercing into his skin as if to see the intent in his words. They all had people they cared about, it didn’t matter which side of the fight you were on. There were many that Terra once saw as friends; however they now stood at the back of her thoughts. She only needed one person in her life.

“If you are sure.” Her voice was low and soft with a sharp seed of doubt in her tone. Anyone could be persuaded to change; Terra was a perfect example of that.

Cloud had been at her side for a long time and to a degree she trusted him. She knew that he would protect her but that didn’t mean he aligned with her plans. There were many types of protection. Terra couldn’t help but wonder how Cloud will perform this duty now. Then there was the reason that he protected her, Sephiroth, it didn’t seem very fair and the constant reminder of the man she lost still hurt.

Time did nothing to heal her wounds.

“I don’t know what the protagonists are going to do. We are to guard the gate to make sure that the others on the moon aren’t interrupted.” So that Robin can work.

"The moon. So they have time to do what they need to even if the Calamity overtakes the planet, huh? If it comes to it we should retreat up there too." His eyes drifted up to the moon, going over in his mind everything that had happened over the past two months. The invasion of Mysidia had not been a particularly high point for anyone's honor.

"Do you know what it is they'll be trying to do? From what I heard the attack on Mysidia....if they don't have those crystalized...Heroes they wanted then how are they going to end all of this?" He wasn't foolish enough to believe that they were going to survive this, but he wasn't looking forward to death or turning to crystal either. Transplanting his soul to the future wasn't much better either if he turned out to be a completely different person like his doppelganger did.

“I do know.”

Except that she was lying and she had become a significantly better liar over the last year. She looked at Cloud as if to study him. Her tone was soft and low but her eyes flashed curiously at him as if seeing him for the first time.

“Are you afraid to die?”

He glanced at her, nodding at her response. But before he could press her further on it her other question stopped him. It wasn't a question he was expecting out of her. But it wasn't a difficult one.

"Yeah...I am. But everyone is. It's normal to be scared of dying. Especially if you're going to war."

Terra simply nodded her head as she turned away from Cloud. It wasn't that she was finished talking to him but she couldn't look at him, it hurt.

"I was never scared of dying. Not until I arrived here." Dying back then would have been a blessing. "Now I'm scared of losing more than I ever thought I'd gain."

She turned back towards Cloud, her eyes distant. She wasn't expecting a response from him.

"I can understand that. After everything that's happened it's sad that it's all come to this. I can't think of any way we can come out of this with everything intact. It seems like the best we can do is reset everything, but if we're reborn we won't exactly be...us." The Cloud that lived in Flence, the doppelganger who had become a doctor, Cloud had tried to keep track of what happened to him over the past two years but eventually he couldn't learn any more. He was probably lost as well.

"For now all we can do is protect what we do have with all our strength. At least we can make these final few days count for something. If only to prove our existence to ourselves."

End?

[personal profile] greenmagick 2016-02-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes."

Terra wasn't sure what else to say or what else to think. She nodded her head towards Cloud and then turned towards the door. The time for talk was over, it was time for them to leave and face the task in front of them. There was still doubt in Terra's heart but she hid it well.

She's been hiding things for these last two years and with practice her mask has becoming unreadable.

"It's time to go."

Sure

"Of course." Cloud nodded and shifted a bit, feeling the weight of his coat and the Masamune. It was all coming to this and he had the feeling that no matter what he wanted blood was soon going to be spilled. He still wasn't sure if he was following the right path, but he'd follow it to the end.

He'd keep Terra safe, until the end.
